This week The Independent newspaper in the UK published a list of its top travel apps.  You can see the top 10 here.

Far be it for us to disagree with such a learned publication, but we honestly felt there were so many good travel apps that it would be worth adding five more to their list that tickle our fancy and help us when we are out and about.  So below you can find our additional five travel apps for those that are hungry for the best and easiest experiences on the move.

1. Navfree

If  you want to get from A to B for free, there is nothing better than Navfree, a GPS navigation app that is available for absolutely nothing and will get you where you need to go.  Whilst many navigation apps can cost upwards of £50, Navfree costs nothing.  It has three other advantages that we really like.  First, the maps are stored on your phone, so even when there is no mobile signal, you still know where you are going.  Second, if you find a new road, roundabout or flyover you can easily report this to Navfree to be included in the next release of the app, so it actually gets better all the time.  Finally it is available for loads of countries, including most of Europe, Australia, Argentina, Mexico and the USA.  Available for iOS and Android.

2. UK Train Times

This is one of the very few apps that we are happy to pay for – and there are lots of them at different prices and with different features.  The best ones enable you to find the times of any train, including live updates on whether it is late and even which platform it will be leaving from.  Unerringly accurate and easy to use, these are essential apps for us when we are going anywhere on a train!  Available for all mobile platforms.

3. Hailo

Hailo bring travelling by taxi into the 21^st Century.  Not only is it amazingly easy to use, you can watch your taxi getting nearer to you after you have ordered it.  It even tells you the number plate of the cab and the name of the driver.  You can pay for your taxi by credit card and have a receipt emailed to you as soon as the journey has ended.  It is available for a growing number of cities including London, Dublin, New York, Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Barcelona.  It is free on iOS and Android.

4. Citymapper

When you want to get around an unfamiliar city using public transport it can be difficult to know where to turn.  The answer is on your phone with Citymapper.  Currently available for London and New York, the app checks where you are, finds the nearest public transport routes to where you want to go and tells you how long the journey will take and the best route.  Our only gripe is that it not available for more cities!  Available free on iOS and Android.

5. TripAdvisor

The daddy of all travel apps, TripAdvisor gives you access to thousands of reviews on hotels, restaurants and things to do all around the world.   Just type in your destination or let the app find you with location services, see what is nearby and find out how other travellers rate the local sights.  The depth of information is amazing.  Available free for iOS and Android. If you’re considering private jet travel, you can shop around at Jettly to find the best deals.
