Is India the scene of the next app gold rush?

Two interesting stories have come out of India already this week showing the two different sides of the mobile app market.  The first concerns the future growth of the mobile gaming and app market in India while the second is a heart-warming story that shows you don’t have to be a mature and experienced developer to make it in the app world.

As a developing country, India is a nation of interest to the mobile industry, a place where the increasing adoption of smartphones is a seen a big revenue generator for companies looking to expand into new markets. The high proliferation of affordable smartphones into India has contributed to this rise, with 382 million smartphone users expected by 2016, according to a study by Avendus Capital.

Of course, apps are not immune to this expectant gold rush and the mobile apps and gaming industry is expected to be worth $450 million (£278 million) in three years time. On the surface this stat is good news for app developers and the projected revenues for paid apps is predicted to rise more than three times up to 2016, bolstered by the increase adoption of a 3G subscribers willing to pay for services rather than turning to piracy. However, conversely, the Average Revenue Per User for paid apps is expected to fall from £1.30 (2013) to £0.77 (2016) – a reduction due to increased competitive pricing from independent developers?

Whatever the factors involved, app developers will still have the same problems attracting the growing Indian app audience in the ever burgeoning app stores. It is always nice to end on a positive note and the second story emerging from the Asian continent this week centres around the young spirit of app entrepreneurship.  Two brothers, Shravan Kumaran, 14, and brother Sanjay Kumaran, 12, are perhaps the world’s youngest app developers. The CEO and President repsectively of Go Dimensions launched the company two years ago and have released an impressive 11 apps. Having cut their coding teeth on Java, they admitted needing a guiding hand, both technically and financially, from their dad when it came to developing games on iOS, but this story shows the app developer stars of tomorrow are starting younger than ever.
