Hints and Tips

Playing Sudoku

Sudoku puzzles start with several fixed numbers, which are coloured black in Sudoku Magic. The objective is to fill in the remaining empty cells so that there is only one of each of the numbers 1 through 9 in each row, column and 3×3 box.

Sudoku Magic Playing Screen

  • To select a cell, simply touch it once
  • To put a number in a cell, press the number button below the puzzle
  • To add or remove ‘pencil marks’ in a cell, tap the pencil button, then press a number
  • Tap the pen icon to switch back
  • Press the eraser button to empty a cell
  • Tap the Hint button to get the correct number for the current cell or a random number if the current cell is already filled
  • To impress your friends, just tap Solve 😉
  • Pause the puzzle by tapping the timer
  • Reverse moves by tapping the backwards arrow (Undo) and repeat moves by tapping the forwards arrow (Redo)
  • If you get a phone call or close the app, your progress is saved and can be resumed by pressing ‘Resume Last Game’ from the ‘New Game’ screen

Capturing a puzzle

Sudoku Magic has an innovative puzzle capturing ability. Whether you’re on the train without a pencil, or just want to show off, getting an electronic copy of your puzzle couldn’t be simpler. Simply select ‘Capture Puzzle’ from the menu, then choose ‘Camera’ and point your iPhone at the puzzle. Sudoku Magic will do the rest and give you a cool visualisation as it works!
Tips for Puzzle Capture

  • For best results, try to hold your iPhone far enough away from the flat paper that there is some space around the puzzle
  • Also, try to avoid thick black likes around the puzzle that may look like a grid (for example, if taking a picture of a book, try not to include the edges of the pages)
  • Sudoku Magic will work at an angle and even copes with some shadows over the paper – try it out!
  • Once the capture process is done, you can correct any numbers that might be recognised incorrectly and Sudoku Magic will tell you how hard the puzzle is
  • You can then add a tag to the puzzle to say where it came from (e.g. ‘Sunday Times’) or play it straight away
