Last month in Cologne, Germany, a veritable feast of games was unveiled at the biggest consumer games show in Europe: GamesCom. With over 340,000 people showing up over three days, it was a great opportunity for mobile developers to show off some amazing games. Here are a few of our favourite games from GamesCom and why we think they’re destined for the big time.
Transport Tycoon
Based on the classic ‘90s game of the same name, Transport Tycoon is a glorious HD reboot that brings one of the most popular PC games of all time into the hands of tablet users.
Challenging players to run a successful transportation business in 49 different scenarios, the game gets you building planes, trains, buses and boats before sending them out in search for cargo and people to transport.
What struck us when we were playing it was the fullness of the experience. While it can look a bit complicated to start with, Transport Tycoon rapidly reveals itself to be an easy to pick up sim, brimming with great gameplay.
Launching in late 2013 with a premium paid price tag, Transport Tycoon looks to prove that it can join the likes of Minecraft and XCOM: Enemy Unknown in monetising, despite the arrival of freemium.
FIFA 2014
The latest entry in EA’s long-standing and hugely successful football series is promising another revolution that could transform the future of Triple-A gaming - by launching as a free to play title.
Despite strong success as a paid game in 2013, EA have made the decision to change the model as part of an attempt to reforge their premier sports series as a mobile friendly game. This includes a newly remodelled control system that is looking to create a smoother experience by replacing buttons with swipe gestures.
While the graphics look sensational and the new control scheme seems to be a move in the right direction, it’ll be interesting to see fan feedback for the new business model. EA previously changed the Real Racing series to free to play to the fury of fans, but recorded a marked increase in DAUs - up to 2 million by the end of Q2 in 2013.
It’ll be interesting to see if gamers “play ball” with this new free to play title.
Godfire: Rise of Prometheus
Rise up against the Gods in this 3D action RPG battling game and help Prometheus to get his revenge.
Now, I know a lot of you are probably thinking that if you replace Prometheus with Kratos then you get God of War. And you’d be right to point out the similarities between Sony’s Godly gorefest and Vivid’s new title as it is pretty obviously a source of inspiration to them.
That said, Godfire looks to be carving out its own little gameplay niche on touchscreens by mixing traditional adventuring with swipe based sword fighting. We’re not sure exactly when it’ll be out but it’ll be interesting to see if it avoids the fate of the studios behind games like Infinity Blade, who closed despite producing a Triple A experience.
