Should App Developers Get Tax Breaks For “Cultural” Games?

The App Show Investigates

Every month, the team at MagicSolver record The App Show podcast. The show, which is devoted to apps and mobile, is packed with news, reviews and features which tackle some of the most interesting issues in the industry in an engaging and informative manner.

This month, we turned our focus towards an issue that could affect game developers across the world. Recently, the UK gaming industry has been on the brink of receiving a sizeable tax break from the British government which could take as much as 25% off their bills. The catch? They have to prove that their games and studio are “culturally British” to qualify for the relief.

But is such a move fair? Or will it simply distort the app gaming market in the UK’s favour against international competitors? The App Show spoke to Dr Jo Twist of UKIE, a leading games body, and Andrew Eades, CEO of gaming company Relentless Software, to discuss the ins and outs of the policy and whether it really is a fair way forward for the industry.

Check out their findings, as well as the rest of the show, by listening to the podcast here: http://bit.ly/msappshow
